PROPOSED ABANDONMENT DEFEATED.

CAPETOWN, July 11. During a recent meeting at Capetown of the South African Customs Union Convention, Hons. Merriman and Fischer supported the proposed abandonment .of tariff preference to the United Kingdom. , • Mr. Botha declared that the abandonment would be calamitous when the United Kingdom was obviously working round to tariff reform and Imperial preference. ' Mr. Fischer then -sided with Mr. Botha, and the abandonment motion was defeated. ..
