A serious accident occurred on’Air. Harold Gardner’s Turau estate yesterday afternoon. A youiig man named John Trigance, aged about 22, belonging to" Linwood, was at work some two or three miles up the gully on the slopes of Alt. Herbert. He was grubbing tussocks, when the ground, which was swamped'.by the recent, heavy rain, gave way, and lie fell over a cliff about 50ft. The accident occurred about 2 o’clock. A doctor was summoned from Lyttelton and tho injured man was pi iced on a stretcher located in a hut on the hillside, and with sbfno difficulty was carried down to the wharf on a sledgo which had been brought up meanwhile. He was brought over to Lyttelton by launch, and taken to the casualty ward, wliero he was found t 0 be suffering from concussion of the brain and a bnd .scalp . ouiul. Tie was then, unconscious, bill recovered consciousness later.
’Ail inquest was held this morningtouching the death of Will. Matthews, aged 73, a resident of Wellington street. Linwood, who drank some poisonous liniment in mistake for an influenza, cure mixture, on Wednesd ly, and died two days later from the effects of the poison. The jury returned a verdict that death was due to heart failure caused by the effects of poison taken by mistake. At an early hour this morning, the dead body of a. newly-born child was found wrapped in sacks in a box in North street, St. Albans. The police, it is stated, have ascertained who tlio parents are. An inquest will be held to-morrow.
