A NEW COALFIELD.
DISCOVERED IN AUCKLAND DISTRICT. A VALUABLE PROPERTY. [Special to “Times.”] . AUCKLAND, July 13. Information is to hand this morning that during the recent heavy rains a landslip took place at the back of Huntly. This revealed an enormous seam of coal of exceptionally good quality, about 40ft in thickness. Tlie adjoining lands, which are all freeholds, have been acquired. The area which, has so far been ascertained to bo coal-bearing covers over 1000 acres, and highly-qualified experts have furnished reports that there is sufficient coil on the property to supply Auckland for over half-a-century. The coal can all be won from “ad-it levels,” thus obviating large enpendituro in shafts and maintaining the same. Fortunately, the coil area is easy of access, the land between it and the Government railway being practically level and free of engineering and other difficulties. The owners of the property intend moving vigorously in opening up the new field, and have already undertaken a trial survey line with a view of constructing a light railway to connect with the Government lino. The discovery of such a large area of coal of fine quality and easy of access is of great eommerical importance to the Auckland district, and those interested intend -at an early date to promote a company to develop the properties and construct tho dine of railway.
