THE WEATHER.
The nvet and wintry weather which Ins been raging in the south during the last few days struck Poverty Bay with full force yesterday. Heavy rain fell during yesterday, and the wind was very bleak. The sea ran high, and the Turanganui river was so considerably silted up by freshes that when returning from the s.s." Monowai in the morning the Tuatea took ground in the channel, and it was quite half an hour before she got clear. The trawler Endon and the schooner Gisborne inward bound were also stuck in the channel, but were got off without difficulty.
At present both dredges are laid up for overhaul and repair, and until the silt is removed there will be some little inconvenience to craft drawing any depth of water, except at high tide.
Reports from the Wharekonae district state, that a heavy fall of snow was experienced yestea'day, and the weather was bitterly cold, while freshes and floods are reported in many of tlie rivers throughout the district.
