MELANESIAN MISSION.
LECTURE BY MR. R, 'G. COATES,
The interesting work of the Melanesian mission was the subject' of a lecture by Mr. R. G. Coates, who is touring New Zealand on, behalf of the mission, in Hci’.y Trinity Schoolroom last evening. The building was crowded, and a large number of lantern views thrown on a screen by Mr, Poiiitoii greatly helped to . give the audience some idea of what the con(litioivfe ai'e of native, life .in the tropical Pacific. Mr. Coates told of the natives before and after news of the Gospel had: been brought to them, of how the mission taught them to give up cannibalism, head-liunting, and tribal wars, and to live at peace. He appealed to all present to assist the work of the mission, and, at the conclusion of the lecture, a collection was taken up. Mr. Coates will speak at Te ICaraki this evening, and at Waei;onga-a-hika College to-morrow evening,
