Apparently the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants has benefited from the increased interest in its operations aroused by the controversy which arose over its reorganisation several months ago. In tli e current number of.the Society’s magazine, it it stated that, judged by tile standard of numbers, enthusiasm, and finance, the Society has never been- insuch a splendid position. The President and general secretary have just completed a. tour of the branches, and ,it is pointed out that everywhere they found a sympathetic audience. In the large majority of cases, votes of. confidence, as well as thanks, have been adopted, and it is extremely significant, -adds the “Railway Review, that one of the these expressions came from Cross Creek, ia. branch which lias hitherto shown its strong disapproval of the existing order of tilings. As proof of the (Society’s advancement, reference is made to the fact that the Thormlon (Wellington) branch has elected 44 new members since May. The Dunedin branch has recently added 33 new members, making -a. total of 1010, Auckland seventy within the quarter, a new sub-branch of the Palmerston North branch has been opened at Marton, and many other bran-< dies 'report increased numbers. Tho Society has £3186 on fixed deposit, with an additional £1670 18s of accumulated 1 funds t 0 the cmjifc of branches, and its membership exceeds 6000.
