AN AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE At the beginning of this year there .wore 837 students in attendcnce at the Ontario Agricultural College—whose first winter terra was begun in January, 1875, with twenty-oight pupils—and the subject of what is termed “Animal Husbandry” received a special degree of attention. Recent investigations, for instance,- have dealt with the relative value of short keep and long keep steers for feeding purposes; the relative advantages of feeding steers in loose-boxes or tied in stalls; the cost of raising pigs from birth to market, so as to observe the ehanco of improvement; and a start has been made in the crossbreeding of swine with the same object in view. The desire for progress in cattle-breeding is also sufficiently pronounced. In fact, students at tho Ontario College aro given abundant practice in judging horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs; practical lectures are delivered, on breeding and pedigroep, feeding, management, and the history and characteristics of the principal breeds of live stock. As a result of the efficient manner in which this branch of work has .been carried on. _the recent honors gained at the International Live Stock Show at Chicago are thoroughly satisfactory.
