CHRISTCHURCH. July 25

Enquiries at the Labor Bureau today went to show that all who require work can be placed on the railway construction at Broken River, wlnlo tho city engineer this morning had no applications from really iecessitous cases.

ASHBURTON, July 25. It was stated that there are forty unemployed in Ashburton, but at a meeting called by one of their number for this afternoon on the main street, and at which the Mayor 'Mr. Davis) and about 300 citizens atten led, not one spoke or responded to tho Mayor’s invitation to air their grievances and' be helped. Later, however, about eighteen men appeared at the Council Chambers and interviewed tiie Mayor, who took tlieir names and occupations. These includ id farm laborers, freezing works employees, flax mill and grain store hands, of whom eight were married. Mr. Davis promised to do 'vs utmost icr the men, and despatched the. following telegram to the Premier: A meeting of unemployed was odd here,, this afternoon, and a number of men who submitted their names are willing to take work on any vioveriiment works. Can you find such employment?”
