Mr. Meagher’s amendment in the Assembly condemning the Government for the attitudo they took regarding the strike, and the system of espionage in the Tramway Department, was negatived by 37 to 30. Air. MoGowen’is. censure motion was negatived by 48 to 30, and the Address-in-Eeply was carried. SYDNEY, July 30.
The tram strike was the greatest fiasco imaginable. Although mass meeting declared to continue the battle, and the men left tho building singing “Rule Britannia,” they foecame individualiste when ‘they reached the open air, and 'besieged the tram depot to sign on. .Members of the Tramway Executive tried to get away from the .trades Hall quietly, but were observed, and a crowd of 1500 gave a roar of indignation, and called upon Lawton to stop. iHe and his companions broke into u run, the crowd (pursuing, crying “Lawton, the traitor! He’s the man who sold ns!” The four members ran like hares. Road metal flew like hail. The he man coursing match ended by the men taking shelter in an hotel alley. One of the executive turned in the doorway. He .presented 'a .revolver, and threatened to shoot the first man •who crossed the threshold. Police reinforcements arrived and quietened the mob, who contented .itself with hooting the 'Parliamentary Labor members and cheering tho Labor Council. Nearlv £BOO lias been subscribed by citizens to reward tramway men who remained loyal to the Government. " Mrs. Ivenna, secretary of the Tailoresses’ Union, .was arrested for calling a train driver a “scab.” She was granted bail. STRIKERS RESUME WORK. TRAM SERVICE RESTORED. United Press Association. The case lagainst Mrs. Henna was dismissed. ~ , , All the men at Newcastle have been reinstated excepting five members of the local branch of the Tramway Union, whose reinstatements have been postponed .pending an inquiry.
