THE UNEMPLOYED.
WORK IN GISBORNE.
, further enquiries were made yesterday by a “Times” representative legarding the matter of unemployed m Gisborne It was stated at a meet■ng of the Trades and Labor Council Oil Saturday night that there were scores of jnen doing nothing and that the books of the local branch of tho Labor Department showed a number of unemployed. Mr. Carmody, in charge of tho Department, was therefore called upon, and, in the course of his remarks, he said that the statements made at the meeting were somewhat exaggerated, and were apt to give a false impression. There aro, as there always is, a number of unemployed, but these were mostly men with no pressing necessity for work. Within the last fourteen days 55 men have been registered oij the Departnient’s.books. Of this number, 24 have been found employment on Government works and seven have been placed with private employers. The majority of those out of work are single men, and, as far as can bo ascertained, they are suffering no great 'hardship. It is also anticipated that more moil will shortly be required on the railway construction works, and this will in itself practically absorb all the unemployed. If may be stated that of the contingent which arrived by the s.s. Wimmera on Saturday, only seven have so far put in an appearance at the Government works, the remainder presumably haring found employment elsewhere.
