Douglas Hamilton, a member of Air, Frank Thornton’s Comedy • Company, who was standing on the Tuntea, at once threw off his cap and overcoat, and plunged into the water to the rescue. The sea was very rough and cold, hut as tho woman’s clothing buoyed her up. Air. Hamilton, who is an expert swimmer, was able to reach her without difficulty and brought her to the launch, where she was helped on hoard by Air. Charles AVynyard and other members of the company. Air. Hamilton spolit all the clothes he was wearing, and a valuable gold watch by his plucky action, which deserves the warmest leonunendation. The unfortunate woman, owing to a bereavement, has been in a melancholy condition of mind for some time, and was coming to Gisborne with her two children to visit 6omo friends. Her actions on board the steamer were eccentric, but none of tile passengers thought she needed Lo bo kept under watch. She was kindly helped down lie gangway to the tender by AJr. Frank Thornton and others, and had hardly reached tho Tuutea’s deck when she placed her hand upon Air. Hamilton’s shoulder and stepped overboard. The woman was none the worse lor her adventure, and. being met at the wharf by her friends was at once taken care of by them.
