GRANNY’S GIRL" TESTED
A MARVELLOUS JERSEY MILKER.
As many people doubted the ability of the Jersey cow “Granny’s Girl” to produce the quantity of butter which lus from time to time been credited to her (say the New Plymouth correspondent of tho “Dominion”), Messrs Griffiths and Cornwall (her owners) decided to have two days’ performance certified to by the Taranaki Agricultural Society. The president (Mr W. Ambury) therefore authorised a committee to watch “Granny’s Girl” being milked on five consecutive occasions. Theso milkings commenced on July 13, and tho committee has now furnished tho following official report to the president of the Society. “We were present at five successive milkings, the first being on the morn-, ing of Monday, July 13, at 7.30 a.ui., when ‘Granny’s Girl’ was milked dry, this being the starting point of the test. The next four milkings took place punctually at 5.30 p.m. and 7.30 a.m. on July 13, 14, and 15. At tho evening milking on July 13, Mr It. TV. D. Robertson (manager for Messrs J. JB. M'Ewan and Co.) was present, and instructed us how to take a correct sample for testing purposes. The duty of taking the sample was afterwards carried out.by Mr gladden-, great care being exorcised in pouring the milk back and forth from one bucket to another as directed by Mr Robertson. When samples were drawn after each milking they were placed in a sample bottle, which was then locked up in a tin box, the key for which was entrusted to Mr (Sladden. On July 20 tho complete sample was delivered to -Mr Rutherford, of Bell Block Dairy Factory, to test. Immediately after each milking the milk was carefully weighed, and resulted as follows: “July 13 (night), 17.051b5. “July 14 (morning), 24.401b5. “July 14 (night), 20.401b5. “July 15 (morning), 25.251b5. “Total, 87.601b5. “Average daily weight, 43.501b5. “Mr Rutherford has reported that the milk tested exactly 6 per cent of fat. The two days’ milk, therefore, contained 5.201bs of butter-fat. In other words, the yield was equivalent to 18.391bs of butter-fat, or 21.461bs of churned butter for the week.” “ ‘Granny’s Girl’ was grazed and rugged in the ordinary way, and was not housed at all except at milking time. When these points are taken into consideration, together with the fact that the weather lias been so cold that there is little nourishment in the grass, and that ‘Granny’s Girl’ has only been fed a ration of hay and about Tib. of bran and lib. of crushed oats at each milking, the result is a wonderful one. She was bred by Mr F. W. Cornwall. She descends from a rich butter strain, being by ‘Jersey Bov’ out of that grand old cow ‘Granny.’ ” In addition to giving such excellent records as a milker, “Granny’s Girl” is also a typical specimen of what is now generally admitted to be one of the most popular breeds of dairy cattle. She produced during the twelve months of her last milking period the remarkable record of 6751bs of buttcr-fat.
