At a meeting .of tho Carpenters’ Union last evening, one new member was proposed, one member was declared on unemployed benefit, and ono was also declared off benefit. A. Reynolds v. John Brooking, amount claimed £3 15s, with costs ss; Arthur Parnell (AirBlair) v. East Coast Timber and Trading Company, Ltd., amount claimed £7 19s 2d, with costs £1 3s Gd. A great deal of inconvenience, was caused to business people on Wednesday by tlio mail for South boing closed punctual at tho advertised time 4 p.m. It has been the custom in tho past for fetters to bo taken up to close on G p.m., but oil Wednesday tlio custom was broken and the rule enforced, the result being that a large number of letters missed the mail. -It was suggested to a “Times” reporter by a business man that when the steamers are late in leaving it would bo a good idea to hang a card near the letter-box at. tho Post Qflico advising tho public that tlio ordinary letter mail had closed and that late fees wero due.
During tho course of Captain Hugo’s remarks to tlio members qf tho Firo Brigade last night, in reference to first aid, ho mentioned, that on ono occasion, at a fire in Wellington, in a two-storied building in AVellington, which was •nipposed to have no one on the premises, a man was found in an msonsiblo condition, and in tho absence of a doctor some of the firemen started artificial respiration with success. It was fully five minutes before a. medical man reached the scene, amV the man was then removed to the hospital, and it was six weeks before ho left that institution. Had it not been for the knowledge possessed bv the firemen, the man would have been dead. He mentioned the case of a firo oil board a vessel in AVellington where no less than thirteen of his men wore rendered unconscious wliilo working in tho hold, anil had to bo attended to at once.
