BREACHES OF BYE-LAWS.

COURT PROCEEDINGS

At tlio Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, beforo Mr. W. A. Barton, S.M., sovoral cases were -heard in which tlio County Clerk proceeded against different persons for breaches of tlio Council’s byo-lawa relating to tlio width of tyros. Mr G. Stock appeared for the informants. 11. D. Gray, of Gisborne, carter, pleaded guilty to having driven a four-wheeled waggon without springs .and having tyres of a width less than five inches, drawn by six horses, along Waikohu road on July 21. Mr. Stock 6aid that ho _ was instructed to press for an increased penalty as the offonces were becoming very frequent, and avliere one was caught many escaped detection. His Worship said that he had already intimated his intention of increasing the penalty, and now deemed it his duty to do so. There was n<> excuse for the offences, ns the bye-laws had been widely made known. A fine of £2, with £1 8s costs, was imposed. .Tanjos Arnptt, of Kaitaratahi, was charged with being the driver of a twoovnoelcd dray without springs, and] having tyres of ;n width of less than four inches, and drawn by three horses along the main To Karaka road on July 31. Mr. Burko appeared for defendant, and pleaded guilty. A fino of £2, with costs 7s, was imposed. John Rowley Murphy, of Tnngihau,.shoepfariuor, was charged with being the owner of a four-wheeled waggon with tyres of a width of less than three inches, and drawn bv six horses along Wliarokopao road on August 3.Mr. Stock appeared (for defendant, and pleaded guilty. A fine of £2 and costs 7s was imposed. James Parker, of Gisborne, who did not appear, was charged with being the driver of a two-wheeled dray without springs, having tyres of a width less than five inches, and drawn by four horses along Wainui road on August 5. He was fined £2, with costs 17s Gd. 17111. Pritchard, of Patutnhi, carter (Mr .Stock), was charged with a similar offence on August 1, and was fined the same amount, with costs £1 9s.
