Floot week made a big break in tho commercial interests ol tbo .Dominion, and the produce and stock markets have boon exception ally quiet. At .Matnw’horo last week very little stock was offering, and reports from Auckland show that there was vory little demand for sheep and cattle. Tho lambing season m now. in full swing, and good percentages are reported from all around tlio district. Tlio wheat and Hour market shows no movement. Potatoes are .firmer, and onions arc almost unobtainable. Butter has receded in price in the south, though tho price in Gisborne shows no alteration. The cows are coming in rapidly in (he Wairarapa and Waikato districts, and ii good buttor season is anticipated. Many factories are already negotiating lor tliis season’s output,- and tho price asked is well over 112 s per cwt. The following are the wholesale prices at- Gisborne for the following produce: • Flour —sacks £ll 10s. bags £ll 17s Gd. Fowl wheat- 5s 2d per bushel. Oats 3s Id per bushel. Potatoes £7 os per ton. ■ Chaff £7.10s per tonr*‘ Butter Is 5d to Is Gd per lb. Honey -IJd jior .lb. Eggs Is Id and Is 2d per dozen. Bacon 9d, ham Kkl per lb.
CUSTOMS RETURNS. The Customs Department, reports the following exports from tho port of Gisborne during the month of July:—Beef, Gl-12cwt. valued at £0504 ; mutton, 27,308 carcases, weighing 12,743 cwt, valued at £16,359; lamb, G 356 carcases, weighing 2032 cwt, valued at £3G71;316 hides, valued at £387; 42,220 skins, valued at £3734; 75 tons of tallow, valued at £7395; and 175,9241bs of wool, valued at £5247.
THE LONDON MARKETS. [Piiess Association.] WELLINGTON. August 17. The following is tho High Commissioner's cable, dated London, August 15: The mutton market issteady. There is not much demand ,but prices are firm. There is a scarcity of prime quality mutton. Current quotas (ions are; Light-weight Canterbury 4Jd, North Island 3Jd; heavy-weight Canterbury 33d, North Island 3]d. Tho lamb market is quiet, a moderate business doing. There is a dull sale for heavy carcases, but a good demand for light weights. There is no change in prices to report. Tho beef market is firm with more enquiry, and small supplies are coming forward. Hindquarters brought 4}d, and forequarters 31d. The buttor market is steady, and prices are well maintained for choicest. New Zealand brands are at 116 s nominal, Danish 1225, and Siberian 109 s per cwt. Tho cheese market is firm, with an upward tendency. New Zealand white makes are at Gls, and colored 59s Gd per cwt. Tho hemp marked continues dull, there being no change in prices. The last week's output from Manila amounted to 16,000 bales. The cocksfoot seed market is firm, but there is little doing. Bright clean 171 b seed brought 79s per cwt. The following are current quotations for Bradford tops: ,30’s (low crossbreds) 10d, 40’s (low crossbreds) 101 d, 44’s (medium crossbreds) lljd, 50’s (balf-breds) Is 3Jd, 56’s (quartcrbreds) Is Gfd, 60’s (merinos) Is Id. Tho market is quiet, with a tendency in favor of buyers. Tho hop market is quiet with no alteration in prices. Tho crop prospects are favorable.
