LONDON, August 17
The ‘‘Times’’ 'Washington correspondent describes tho appalling brutality of the mob at- Springfield as surpassing any of the racial excesses of recent years. When the mob attempted to lynch two negroes in tho gaol, one of whom was accuseed of a crime, they communicated with the officials, who took them both away by motor. The mob, being foiled, then wrecked •tho restaurant belonging to the owner of the motor. The soldiers in the tussle at this stage killed two and wounded twenty. Tho mob thereupon rushed the negro quarters, when all had taken refuge in tho arsenal or in the suburbs. The mob destroyed their property, and two innocent negroes were'eaught and lynched. An attempt to reach tho arsenal as frustrated. A brick struck on the head and seriously injured Mr. ClalHn, a prohibition candidate for the Presidency, while he was shielding a negro. Renter's Springfield correspondent states that the cavalry charged the mobs. Tho riots aro now quelled, but the situation of the negroes is piteous. Few dare venture into the streets.
