AUGIyLAND, \August 20. The losses occasioned to importers through pillaging or cargo were retired to by Alessrs Ellis and Co. in a letter to the Chamber of Commerce read at this afternoon’s meeting. The firm complained of persistent petty pillaging of goods arriving trom oversea, and as a remedy suggested that subscriptions should he invited from importers in Auckland and a fund established, so that a reward of up to £25 might be offered for information leading to the conviction of the pilferers. Air. J. B. AlcEarlane, tho Chambers’ representative of tho Harbor Board, said that when the now wharves were finished they would be properly controlled. It was decided to reply that the Chamber understood the Harbor Board and the Justice Department were taking special steps in connection with the matter, and tho question of a fund might bo left in abeyance in the meantime.

CHRISTCHURCH, August 20. . A serious accident occurred' qj: Raugiora about noon yesterday. A"young man named J. AVhitmore, aged 20 years, came from the North Island with a friend named Hall, and was staying with the latter’s uncle, Mr, A. Bussing. During the morning the young men were out shooting at a target. AA’hitmoro was standing in tho doorway of a shed, and Hall was a short distance away to the left. AVhitmoro fired a shot and stepped quickly out of tho doorway to ascertain tho result. Just at that moment Hall fired, and tho bullet struck A\ hitmore in the neck, below and behind the left ear, passing through the right eye, and shattering -tho eyeball. • AVhitmoro was removed to a nursing home, where he was attended by medical men, who removed the eye. Little hope is 'Entertained of Ids recovery. AVhitmore lias no relatives in New Zealand.

Early yesterday morning a young min named Denis Bock was taken to the hospital suffering from several severe wounds on the head. It is stated that Bock had been boarding with some friends near the Addington saleyards, and at about 12.30 a.m. crawled to the house and said that ho had been assaulted and beaten on the head with a stick. He was in a dazed and faint condition, and was removed to the hospital. Bock said that lie had been followed from Tuam Street by Ins assailant, but had not a clear recollection of what had happened. His head was considerably injured. -- ■

It is reported that the store of Air. Collins, oi lempleton, was entered Oil Tuesday night by .a burglar, and a number of articles of value stolen, amongst them being -about a dozen watches and a quantity of wearing apparel. °
