THE GENERAL ELECTIONS.

AUCKLAND SEATS

Mr Vernon Reid, solicitor, of Kawakawa, has been chosen as the Government candidate for the Bay of Islands seat on Mr Houston’s retirement from active politics. Has principal opposition (says the Auckland correspondent of the Dunedin “.Star”) will come from the small cockatoos, who consider that there are enough lawyers in the House. Mr J. C. Johnson will be his main opponent, and he will carry the vote of the Opposition and many small farmers.

The rival parties in Grey Lynn have girded up their loins and are rushing to the fray, and it is probable (telegraphs tlio Auckland correspondent of the Dunedin “Star”) that in no constituency in the Dominion has so much work been already accomplished. Both parties have strong committees, and canvassing is already under way. Not a house will be left unvisited long before the 'hand-to-hand struggle commences. The Minister of Education has never had so strong a committee behind him, and his followers are confident of winning by a majority which will surprise those not absolutely in the fray.
