IYHANGAREI, August 25. A meeting of Justices of tho Peace, the Mayor presiding, was held today, when it was resolved to draw up a petition to be signed by all the members of the local Bench directing the attention of the Justice Department to the inadequate provision made for prisoners at AVliangirei. Only two cells were provided, and at times- as many as three prisoners were crowded into one.
NAPIER, August 25. At a meeting of tho Napier Harbor Board this afternoon the question of the Board joining the Hawke’s Bay Employers’ Association came under* review. - The chairman (Mr. J. Vigor Brown) said that at last meeting *he had quesioned the action of the Board, in 'deciding to join the Association, and had not agreed with it. He had since made inquiries and found . that n 0 other Ijoard in the Dominion had joined am. Employers’ Association, and it avas illegeal for a Board to use it funds for the purpose of entering such _ a body. Oil the motion of tho chairman it was decided, to rescind tho previous resolution and not join tho Association.
WELLINGTON, August 25. 1 Frederick James- Tolley, a young man, was brought up at the Magistrate’s Court this morning charged with using obscene language. Dr. McArthur, S..M. sent him t<> gaol for 14 days without the option of a fine. His Excellency the Governor presided at the annual meeting of the Wellington branch of tlio St. John’s Ambulance Association to-night. Lord Plunkct spoke in high terms of appreci a tion of tho. work done by the Association, which, however, could bo increased if more funds were available. Tho Hon. G. Fowlds also spoke highly of the work of tho Association.
The following is Captain Edwin’s weather forecast to 3 p.m. to-morrow: Expect strong southedv winds and ,a rising barometer, with cold cloudy and wet weather generally. Owing to the increased cost of commodities the Wellington Hospital Trustees to-day decided to increase by 5s per week the rate of maintenance t 0 be charged patients who are able to. pay. The rates will now be 30s per week for patients residing in the-Wellington Hospital district, and £2 per week for patients from other parts. To-day a young man named Arthur Nanknell was acquitted on a charge of carnally knowing a girl under 16 years of age. CHRISTCHURCH, August 25, At the Supreme Court to-day divorce decrees wore granted in the following cases: Bayfield v. Bayfield, wife’s petition on the ground of misconduct; Cohen v. Cohen, wife’s petition on the ground of failure to comply with an order directing restitution of conjugal rights; Hopkins v. Hopkins, wife's petition on the ground of misconduct. General regret is felt throughout the farming community of Canterbury that’Mr. W. Lowrie lias resigned his position ns director of the Lincoln Agricultural College, having received the offer of an important position as director of agriculture in one of the Australian States. At the inquest on the body of A. E. Heycock, found on the railway lino last evening, the-jury returned a verdict that deceased met his death by being struck by a railway engine, but there was no evidence to show how the accident occurred.
