GISBORNE GRAZING RUNS.
A POLITICAL “PULL.”
(Special to “Times.”)
WELLINGTON, August t'fi. In the House to-day Mr. Hemes raised the question of the renewals of certain Poverty Bay grazing run leases. Certain persons, lie said, had not been granted renewals, the Government having resumed the land for closer settlement. Mr. McNab replied that under the law which permitted such a course >t was the policy of the Department to have runs subdivided when opponun'ity offered, if such runs were suitable for closer settlement. Mr. Massey said that a man supposed to have a political “nub was not disturbed in his tenure, wnile ; two others had to submit to su'odins; m of runs, the leases of which they expected to have renewed at the end of the term of eleven years. Mr. Remington and Mr. Hogg dofended the action of the authorities. Mr. Herries said ho was not opposed to the cutting up of runs in the cases to which lie had referred to. However, the ranger of the Board recommended that two runs should bo cut up and one partially cut up, but what happened was that one was renewed in toto, and the other two were cut up. Everyone who knew the district knew the politics of the three lessees. He hoped the papers in connection with the matter would be presented to Parliament. • Mr McNab said the Board recommended that some of .the runs were suitable for subdivision and others were not. The Department adopted the Board’s recommendation.
