The following revenue was received at tho Customhouse last week:—Customs duties £713 Is lOd, beer duty £l9 9s Gd, light dues £l9 9s 7d, shipping fees £2 lGs 3d, Harbor Board revenue £IOS 0s 4d, other receipts £9 Is lOd.
Our Wellington correspondent wires that on the Stock Exchange on Saturday Waihi’s sold at £9 3s 6d, Talisman’s at £2, Waiotahi’s at 8s 3d, Tairua Conqueror’s at Is and Is Id, Manawatu Railway’s at £2 8s 6d, and Gisborne Gas at 18s 6d.

The question of inviting ‘ 'Tommy” Burns, the champion boxer of the world, to give a display in Wellington with his trainer, was considered at a meeting of the-Wellington Boxing Association' the other night. I.t, was 'agreed'that the secretary write to Mr W. F. Corbett (representing the Association in Australia) with a view to obtaining Burns’ terms for' a visit. Conscience again! In last week’s Gazette the Commissioner of Stamps (Mr. C. A. Hickson) acknowledges the receipt of £2 10s 3d forwarded to tho Deputy Commissioner of Stamps at Christchurch by some person unknown, with the memorandum —“Amount duo to Stamp Department for a breach of the Stamp Act committed in ignorance.”
. Before leaving Australia on their road to England, the touring Australian Rugby football team played a game at Melbourne against a Victorian team. Three of tho latter were New Zealanders, being Priest, of Southland. J. F. Birch, of Christchurch, and R. Emmanuel, at one time .off the Poverty Bay district. The gaiilKyit may bo said, resulted in a win for the Australian team by 26 points to 6. At a meeting of the committee of tile Gisborne Rowing Club it was decided to hold the annual meeting of the club on September lltli. A subcommittee was appointed to report upon necessary repairs to boats and sheds, and a committee, consisting of the captain, secretary, and Messrs H. M. Puflett and D. Cowan was appointed to work up a club ball. It was reported that members are anxious to commence training as soon as possibles and a most successful season is anticipated. Although dredging operations have been carried on for some considerable time in the channel, very little improvement appears to have been effected, and the river is still in a very had state. The scow Zingara got fast aground opposite her berth at the upper end of the town wharf just on high tide on Saturday evening, and again yesterday evening lxith the schooner Awanui and the ketch Coronation had a similar experience, being aground abreast of their respective berths for some time and touching bottom several times coming up the channel.
Air. M. Kinibcl has received a permit from the Colonial'Secretary, and intends to proceed at once with the act union instituted by Joseph Dilute a lew weeks ago. 110 wishes it to bo known that the tickets sold by Dante still hold good, and That the holders thereof are eligible to participate in the art union. Tho prizos consist ol several fine pictures, and Die drawing will take plaee about the middle of October.
The box plans for Aliss Ainsloy s concerts at ltis Majesty’s Theatre on Thursday and Friday, September 3rd and 4th, were opened at Alillor’s on Saturday morning, when an early demand for seats set in, and, judging from the application for seats, it is safe to predict a successful season lor Gisborne. Speaking of her perlorinanee at Madame Alelba's concert, the London “Morning News” said : “Aliss Aiuslcv is the possessor of a very fine contralto voice, well cultivated', of remarkably oven tone ‘throughout, and used .with admirable power of expression.” Afina Ainsloy will be assisted at her concerts by the popular baritone, Air. Hamilton Hodge's. Tho several services at the Salvation Army Citadel yesterday, conducted by Adjutant Dickens and •Major Holdnway, were well aliened. Good congregations were present in die morning, and at both afternoon and evening meetings the seating accommodation was fullv taxed. The lliroriros assisted in tho musical portion of the services, and their sweet songs woro thoroughly enjoyed. A most elaborate programme has been arranged for ito-night’s entertainment in His Alajcsty’s Theatre, and a large attendance is anticipated. The programme in detail appears in ■another column, and a glance at it will suffice to show that a most enjoyable time may'be expected. The doors will be opened at 7.15 p.m., and the performance commences at 8 p.m. Tickets may he obtained during the day at Afr. AY. Miller’s.
William Robert Friar, the Oneliunga schoolboy, who was second in the Lady Gwendolen Guinness Trophy competition at Bisley (the individual test for schoolboy marksmen of the Empire), was received by Air R. A. Robinson, chairman of the London County Council. Lord Roberts also met Friar, patted him on tho back, and said: “I hope you’ll shoot well.” Friar (writes the “Daily Alail”) is just fifteen years old. “I have brought my carbine and my traps over,” lie said, “and I am to begin practising at the 200 and 500 yards ranges at Harrow. All the boys in our schools in New Zealand are keen on shooting, and training with the ride is part of the curriculum of most schools. I have won many prizes, but the one 1 think most of is the Inter-Island Shield, which was open to New Zealand.” Tho lad is a nephew of Air Friar, of this town. A meeting of the Friendly Societies Conference was held on Friday evening, when tlie action of the Hospital Trustees in refusing to refund a sum of £l9 wrongly paid to them was discussed. It was pointed out by those present at the deputation to the Trustees that a definite statement had been made that the amount was to he returned, providing the AuditorGeneral offered no objection, and seeing that tho latter replied that he saw no reason why the amount should not he refunded, the Conference appeared to be at a loss (to know the reason of tho Trustees’ action. It was finally decided that a deputation again wait on the Trustees at its next meeting relative to this matter. A lengthy report was furnished by Bro. Whinray on tho success of friendly societies’ dispensaries, a number of reports and balance-sheets being submitted, which proved tlie financial success of the respective dispensaries, lb was decided that each delegate bring the matter before his lodge, and rei>ort later as to the opinion of tlie various lodges on tho matter.
