HEAVY GALES IN CANTERBURY.

SLIGHT FLOOD AT INVERCARGILL. [Press Association.]

CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 10. A severe windstorm swept through Christchurch early this morning. After midnight the weather cam© from the nor’-west. A few hours' later the wind veered round to the south-west, and at 5 o’clock gust after gust struck the city, knocking trees about and doing a good de.il of damage to orchards and gardens. A heavy north-west. gale sprang up at Raugiora early this morning and caused extensive damage throughout the district. Chimneys, fences, and sheds were thrown down, and the telegraph and telephone communications were interrupted. A heavy shower of rain fell about 5 a.m., and the wind then moderated.

The heavy north-west wind of this morning was responsible for a serious interruption of the telegraph system between the South and the North Islands, complete communication not being restored till 11.45 a.m INVERCARGILL, Sept. 10. Heavy rain fell in Invercargill this morning and, in conjunction with a high spring tide and a westerly wind, caused a bauking-up of tlie estuary, and a good donl_pf Hooding of lowlying lands. One house, at least, was surrounded by water, but there was no danger. Two life-boats were wished out of the A venal Rowing Club’s sheds, the new show grounds were flooded, and the new tramway bridge to Otatara was awash. So far no serious damage has been reported, and with the going down of the tide and the slackening of the rain and wind the fined water has receded.

WELLINGTON, Sept, 10.. A fierce northerly pale prevailed in Wellington throughout most of to-da,v, accompanied by rain storms in the morning. No particular damage is reported, except a slight subsidence of tho email wharf at Rona Bay. The training ship Amokura parted from her liVoorings. Her anchors drifted between the coal hulks in tho harbor, and she had to obtain the services of a tug to tow her hack to an anchorage.
