A duel between M. Markoff and M. Pergament at iSt. Petersburg was prevented by a comical incident. After the principals and seconds had taken up their positions in the suburban park, to which they proceeded in the small hours in motor-cars, escorted by numerous reporters, the police suddenly appeared on the scene and stopped -the proceedin';,. litnatured people say that the police were not unexpected. Strangely enough, the seconds ■ tested the . pistols by firing trial shots, which proved a signal for the appearance of the guardians of the law.
A Dunedin citizen was much impressed during a recent visit to the North Island with the amount of business being done in the large and small towns there, and also with the vast tracts of land that are now being opened up for settlement. . ‘‘Dunedin may bo very sound,” he added, ‘‘but we are not doing the businem bore that they are doing up in the North. iSomothing must be done if we hope, to keep pace with our northern friends.”
A paragraph in Lloyd’s “Shipping Gazette,” stating that the s.s. Orient., built at Bristol in 1355, was supposed to be the oldest steamship afloat, produced two letters in a subsequent issue of that journal, thio stated that the steamer Collier, now running beweon-Bristol and Swansea, had been built at Glasgow in 1818, had mado a voyage, from London to tiio colonies before the Orient was built, and, from appearances, was likely to do her regular business at 10 knots an hour for many years to come. The second letter disposed of the Collier’s claims by stating that tho steamer John, of. Bristol, now running between Bristol Channel ports, had been built at Neath Abbey in 1841. The writer of the letter, Captain Edwin Allen, added in proof of the accuracy of his statement, that he had been master of the John for two and a half years.
