FOOTBALL SATURDAY’S MATCHES. Only tlireo minor matches were played on Saturday, and the football season proper is practically at an end. The weather was beautifully fine, and' both the Domain and the Taruheru ground, where the respective games took place, were in excellent order. TARUHERU 14 v. MAKAURI 3. These teams mot on the freezing works ground in their return match, both sides being fully represented. Taruheru had the advantage of a slight wind in the first spell, and when the half-time whistle sounded the scores were three points each. After the welcome spell, Taruheru livened up considerably, and added 11 points to their total, while their opponents were unable to increase their score. The game finally ended with the scores:' Taruheru 14, Makauri 3. For the victors tries were scored by Smith (2), Roderick, and T. Sharp, and Roderick converted his own.try'. Higgins scored for the losers, but the try was not converted. Mr. A. Pritchard refereed. WADE AND GRAY 9, GEO SMITH 3. Quite a number of keen partisans of either team witnessed this match on the Domain on Saturday. The game was full of amusing incidents, and in or two cases especially some good football was shown. Wade and Gray’s were hard pressed for a time by their opponents, but the plumbers lasted better, and eventually ran- out winners by 9 points to 3. For the winners Gray, Hogg, McKinstry, and Rait were the best, and Morell, Somervell, and Miller played well for the losers. Mr. W. Hay refereed. HIGH SCHOOL 13 v. TIS ARAI 0. The High School boys met a team of boys from To Arai on No. 2 ground at the Domain. The visitors were poorly represented, being able to put only 11 in the field, and the School boys were easily victorious by 13 to nil. The Otago-Auckland football match was played to-day at Alexander Park under ideal weather conditions, and in the presence of some 3,000 spectators. The contest was the last of the season for the RanfUrly Shield, and resulted in a win for Auckland by eleven points to five. Otago played against the sun in the first spell, Paton kicking off to near Auckland’s twenty five. A special general meeting of tho Gisborno Lawn Tennis Club was -held in Erskine’s Buildings on Saturday evening. Mr. T. Alston Coleman -occupied the chair, and there was a representative attendance. Air. C. Blackburn was elected secretary and treasurer for tho ensuing year. The Club decided to.erect a new pavilion and carry out other improvements to the courts, which are expected to be completed in time for tho opening of the season. UOLF - A very largo number of golfers, including many ladies,' turned out on the links on Saturday. The ladies had three separate competitions—driving, approaching, and putting, and the men were playing for the final monthly medal. In the ladies’ driving competition Aliss DeLautour drove the longer ball, her drive measuring 132 yards lit. Aliss Adams and Airs. Barlow tied for second place with u distance of 128 yards. Next in order came Aliss Sweet and Airs. Cole (125 yards), and Aliss E. Barker (124 yards). The driving was not quite so good as last year, when Airs. Morgan, won with 147 yards, but a strong side wind appeared to make an- unsteady stance. Airs. Burke won the approaching competition, and Aliss Adams the putting. Alessrs L. Brown and F. Traill acted as judges. The men’s fifth and last medal handicap competition was won' by C. A. Fenwick with a score of 968 — 88, G. AVilloek being second with 96 —s—9l. Before tho ladies dispersed for the day, Airs. Alorgan, the captain of the ladies’ chib, presented Aliss Adams, who is shortly leaving Gisborne, with a pretty rose bowl from the members of the ladies’ club, and in a neat speech expressed the good wishes of the members for Aliss Adams’ future welfare. Next Saturday will be a practice day, and on the following Saturday, 26th, which is the formal closing day, a mixed foursome will he played for the President’s trophy. On Friday afternoon the ladies competed for prizes presented by the captain, Airs. F. S. Alorgan. Airs. O’Aleara was the winner in the A division, and secured a pretty umbrella, with cleek handle. In the filial for the men’s championship (the Goolan Cup), Kurupo Tarelia beat Barraud 5 tip and 3to play. Barraud started badly, and Tarelia was 6 up at the eighth hole. After tliut they kept fairly well together, but Barraud was oif in putting, and lost several chances of gaining on his opponent. It was not a first-rate exposition of tho game. The men’s final handicap was won by F. Raven (hep 18), who was 4 up. H, Kawhi (hep 1) was second, 1 up ; and G. F. Thorburn (hep 2) was third', all square. The mixed foursomes was won by F. T. Boys and Aliss AI. Hindmarsh. HQGKEY. CHAMPIONSHIP SHIELD. WANGANUI REPULSED. [PnEss Association.] AUCKLAND, Sept. 12. Auckland to-day defeated Wanganui in a match for tho New Zealand Hockey Association’s /Championship Shield, at Renmera. For the first five minutes Wanganui showed great dash, and Coe notched a goal. Tho Aucklanders then assorted themselves, and the Wanganui men were never again in the hunt, Auckland eventually winning by nine goals to one. For tho winners- all tho forwards scored, ALn-on getting three goals. Barry two. Brooke-Sntith two, and Walter and Wei ham one each. Mr. E. E. Aladdon was an efficient referee. Auckland have withstood ■ seven challenges for the Shield this season, and will now hold it until, next year. THE TURF. A RIDER INJURED.
