The fine of £IOO which the Arbitration Court imposed upon the Wellington Operative Bakers’ Industrial Union of Workers in connection with tlie recent strike has been paid (says the N. Z. “Times”). At about 10.30 on Friday morning the president of the union, Mr Harlnnd, accompanied by two'or three of hie henchmen, visited the Labor Department and handed over the money, spot cash. Whether a tarpaulin muster was necessary to make up the- amount has not transpired, but there was four pounds’ worth of silver and 90 sovereigns. Tho receipt for tho money was issued to the president of the Bakers’ Union.

At the present time (says the “Ashburton Guardian”) ail unusual number of -farmers are desirous of selling their farms, or at least in a position to treat with a view to effecting sales. Some consider that land will decrease in value, while others are apprehensive of the issue of the coming harvest. Farming certainly has not been so remunerative as it might have been during the past two seasons, but where the shortage of products occurred, increased values ruling almost counter-balanced the deficit. Mon who have closely watched tho land market for years are firmly of opinion that land will not decrease in value in face of the over-increasing demand, and should the coming season prove successful—and there is every reason to believe that such will lie the case—there may bo even a slight increase in tho price of the land.
