There was a largo ‘attendance at the smoke concert in Erskino’s Hall last evening, arranged by the Gisborne Football Club to celebrate the. winning of the Lysnar Challenge Shield in the Thmmlay ,competition, under the jurisdiction of tho Poverty Bay Rugby Union. Mr. D. J. Barry (president of the Club) presided, and was supported by Mr. R. Johnston (vice-president) and Mr. J. Shaw Thompson (captain). After tho toast: of “Tho King” had been loyally honored, Sir. Thompson read apologies for absence from Mess srb tV. D. Lysnar (-donor of the banner), G. B. Oman, R. Seymour, and R. Robertson (vice-presidents), H. E. Maude (chairman of tho Management Committee of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union), J. S. Wane hop, and F. J. Cowl-rick.

Mr. R. Johnston proposed “The Poverty Bay Rugby Union.” Though ho did not profess to know a great deal about Rugby football, his sympathies were with the game, and lie would help it along in any way in his power. Ho considered they had a capable- set of delegates on the local Rugby Union, who controlled the game well. He congratulated the Gisborne Club on winning the Thursday competition. Tho names of Messrs E. L. Maude (lion, sec.) and D. Cowan (ex-secretary)) were collided w-ith the toast.

Mi*. Maude, in responding, regretted the unavoidable absence of tho chairman of the management committee. Few peoplo realised tho vast amount of work that the delegates •had to do, or how far -a. good or badunion could lu.iko or mar-the success of the gaino in a district. Ambitious juniors wore sometimes' inclined to imagine that they could run the show better, but on the whole he claimed that the local union was controlling the game in a satisfactory manner. Mr. Cowan said a case of ringingin had occurred in coupling lijs name with the toast, as he was not on the executive of the Rugby Union. In his opinion they had in this district as good a- union -as existed anywhere in the colony. (Applause.) Mr. T. Clarkson proposed the toast of “Kindred Sports,” -and reminded those present that Rugby football, though a fine game, was not the only game that- was played. He huiiiorfously referred to bowls, hockey, -athletics, swimming, and tennis. The speaker congratulated the Gisborne Club on annexing the Thursday challenge banner, and stated that the efforts of Messrs- Ansell (secretary) and Thompson -(captain) had contributed largelv to the success of tell Club.

The toast- was responded to by Messrs W. Gibson (cricket and golf), B. J. Bright (rowing), H. J. Grieve (hockey), D. Cowan (tennis), and W. Morgan (bowling). ill*. E. L. Maude proposed “The Gisborne Football Club,” coupled with the name of the captain (Mr. ,J. Shaw Thompson). The Club had been fortunate in that it started with tho most capable secretary (bar, perhaps, Mr. J. A. Eaton) he had ever come across, He referred to Mr l . M. B. Ansell, who, the speaker stated, had sent in more names for classification to t'he Rugby Union than any other club secretary in either competition. In Mr, Thompson, the captain, the Club had an able general, who.had devoted a great deal of time off tho field in attending to the interests of the Club. The Club’s delegate on the Union (Mr. 0. Morse) had also ably represented the Club. He heapti’ly congratulated the Club on their success, and -asked those present to drink the health of ‘‘Our Hosts, gallant winners of the Thursday competition.” (Applause.) Mr. Thompson, in responding, said that liis Club was very proud of tho honor of winning the Thursday competition. They had had some strong clubs to meet, and most of the games had been stubbornly contested. He attributed the success to the interest and enthusiasm of the members and officials, -and lie also paid a high tribute to Mr. Ansell (the .secretary). He considered that the success that had -attended the Thursday competition this season justified more -attention being devoted to the competition by the Rugby Union next season. Mr. Thompson, on- behalf of the Club, then presented Mr. Ansell with a gold watch-guard in recognition of his services, i '

Mr. Ansell modestly responded, and s-aid that his duties had been .made light by the willing manner in which all worked for tho success of the Club. Other toasts honored were: —“The Referees’ Association,” proposed by Mr. W, R. Brady, and responded toby Mr. L. E. Williams; “Kindred Clubs,” proposed by Mr. Thompson, and responded' to by Messrs H. M. Puflett (City), W. R. Brady( Alhambra), and- A. P. Ka.ipara (Star); “The Ladies,” proposed by Mr. J. F. Pettie, and 'responded to by Messrs B. J. Bright and J. McLachlan; “Tlie Prose,” proposed by Mr. C. Morse, and responded to by the representatives present; “The President” (Mr. Barry), proposed by Mr. Thompson. During the evening, the President presented the gold medals for best back and- forward to Messrs H. Henderson and J. Scott, and intimated, amidst applause, that ho would have pleasure in donating similar -medals next season.

The recipients, who were loudly cheered, briefly--'.returned thanks. Sir. Barry, the president, was presented with an enlarged framed photograph of the playing members of the Club; In making the presentation. Mr. Thompson, the captain, referred to Mr. Barry as a thorough sport, and said that the members of the Club had expressed a wish tint Mr. Barry should receive some slight memento in recognition, of the interest be bad taken in the Club’s welfare. Mr. Barry heartily thanked them for the presentation, and stated that lie would give the photograph an honorable-position in his home, and it would serve to remind him of his connection with the- Gisborne Club. Mr. Pettie intimated, amidst applause, that he would donate a gold medal for competition amongst, members of tire Club for next season. During the evening a capital concert programme was interspersed with the toasts. Messrs J. Bowman and Von Lubbe ably played the accompaniments. Songs wore sung by Messrs H. Gibson, H. J. Grieve, J. Bowman, E. Austen, 11. Wilkinson, and B. .J. Bright, and recitations were delivered by Messrs P. A. Eadie and W. Gibson. The catering, in. the hands of Mr. J. Erskine, left nothing to be desired.
