FOOTBALL.

CITY BAND 11 v. FIRE BRIGADE 6 Owing to the unsettled appearance of the weather, and a slight ruin in the early part -of the day, there was a limited attendance at the above match .at Victoria 'Domain yesterday •afternoon. The game was played in a very friendly spirit, 1 and although many of the players were “short of work,” it- was willing from start to finish. Notwithstanding the'greasy nature of the playing field, and that the digits of some of the players seemed to have an oleaginous coating, some very good play eventuated. Niell, wing three-quarter for ithe Band, stood out on his own in the first spell, and showing a clean pair of heels to his opponents, scored three good tries, one of which was converted by J. AlcConnell. R. YVildish, -and J. Stewart also scored for the Brigade from a forward rush on each occasion. The teams wore fairly even, the Band hacks being superior and faster than the Brigade men, and their forwards -had the hotter -of the linc-ouit play. The Brigade, -however, were better in-the scrums and in the loose. For the winners Neill, Wayman, Nasmith, and Aliller in the backs did very good work, as also did Br-agge and Dore in the forwards. Young on the wing d'd some good work ait times. For the Brigade most of the hacks were on a nar, and all the forwards pi lyed hard, Henderson being about the best. With practice this player would he fit for any senior team. G. Wildish and J. AlcLachbui also showed glimpses of their old form, tho former instituting some solid dribbling. Secretary Lnpidge, .although his. knowledge of the game was somewhat ertide, followed up ill good style. Air. J. ALnrtin officiated as referee, and gave every satisfaction, the. line umpires being Alessrs L. Clark and Alorgan. THE NORTHERN UNION GAME. TARANAKI BEATS AUCKLAND. [Press Association.] NEW PLYAIOUTH.
