BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. Tho usual fortnightly meeting of tho Gisborne Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lysnar), Crs. Pettie, Dnr ton, Somervell, Whinray, and Williams. CORRESPONDENCE. The assessors (Messrs A. Wachsniunn and W. G. Shornatt) reported that they valued the Patutahi reserve at an annual rental value of £255 jier annum. Mr. Cameron, who. holds the lease, asked that compensation be allowed at the end of the lease, as the rental had been increased from £75 per annum to £255. The Council promised to give the request full consideration. After Mr. Cameron withdrew the Council decided not to allow for improvements in the renewed' lease. The Mayoress asked for permission to erect swings l on the Wnikanao beach, for the use of children.

Permission Vvasi granted, Crt. Darton stating that the Alayoress deserved tho thanks of the Council. A telegram was received from tho Prime Minister sotting forth tho AA’ellington .arrangements for the celebration of Dominion Day on Saturday next. The Mayor said Saturday was a very .awkward’ day. Ho would rather see the anniversary celebrated on a Friday or Monday afternoon. The school committees were willing to fall in with those arrangements'. Cr. Darton thought the day should be Thursday. It was decided to celebrate Dominion Day on Thursday, tho Mayor, Crs. Pettie, Bright, ancl Mann to form a committee to carry out the arrangements. The Council decided to declare a half-holiday from noon for tho celebrations.

The Poverty Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Association asked' that show days should be declared holidays. It was decided to declare AA’ednesay, October 26tli, a whole holiday, and that the shopkeepers be .asked to close at 10 o’clock in the morning. Messrs Dalgety and Co. submitted prices for a road-sweeping and scraping machine. The Alayor moved that the Finance Committee be authorised io purchase a machine, if lit could be financed. The motion was carried.

' The Fire Board gave notice of its intention to .apply for a transfer of the section cm which the fire station stands in Palmerson Road. It was decided to object to the Board acquiring the section, and suggest a conference with tho Council. The Overseer’s /and Inspector’s reports dealing with routine matters were adopted. It was decided to ask Mr. R. Hay to complete his report on the Borough building levels and bench marks.

The Alayor reported that lie had purchased a Straker motor waggon in terms of the Finance Committee’s report. The AA r onks Committee licked that the Council meet next Tuesday to consider the loan proposals. Tho request was agreed to. The night watchman reported that the fireball was cracked, and it was decided to inform the Fire Board of the circumstance. Cr. AVilliams said there were two thorough!ires called Harris Street in the borough, and ho moved that the name of one bo changed. He thought AA’hinray Street would bo appropriate. He gave notice of motion t 0 that effect. The Council then went into committee to receive a report from the Alayor on tho waterworks contract.
