GISBORNE PRIVATE BAND.
GENERAL MEETING. There was a largo attendance of members and supporters at tho meeting of tho Gisborne Private Band held in the Cosmopolitan Club last evening. His AVorship tho Mayor presided. 'Tho report and balancesheet, which were adopted, showed that tho band had been, formed on February lltli, 1907, with a membership of 12, and had increased to 29, notwithstanding that several players -had left tho district. The Band had 'fulfilled 1 several engagements, very satisfactorily,, tlio first of which was the Hospital- socials on September 19tli and 20th, J 907, for which the music supplied by tho Band was -highly commonded. Tlio Band organised -a benefit, in -aid of tlio widow and family of tho late -Charles Everitt, ono timo conductor of tho Thames Naval and tho To Arolia Bands, tlio result being a credit balance of ' 085 13s fid. Tho Band assisted -in the Hospital Sunday demonstration on Sunday, -September 6th, which was organised by the Gisborne City Band, for which the collections amounted to £8 2s p 4d. Tho various open-air concerts which have been, given have boon very well attended by the public. The Band havo decided ,to give concerts at jomo of the outlying centres of the" district, which will include Patutahi and To Aral, during the spring and summer months, for tho bonefit of the country settlers. As the members of the Band have provided tho expenses of its organisation, which included £l7O for instruments, they arranged a- series of socials for the purpose of assisting its finances. Those have proved very successful, and tho committee acknowledges and aiipreciates tlio -help given by a number of gontlemon, besides tbe assistance rendered by the musicians. A special vote of thanks -is due to tho Ladies’ Committee, who have boon instrumental in the various successful funciions which have taken place. The last of tho series will be held on Thursday, September 24tli, which takes tbe form of a plain and fancy dress -and poster ball. The question of providing the # .Band with a uniform has boon considered, hut, owing to there being so few engagements, combined witli the fact that the Band has not appealed for any monetary assistance, it has not been able to' obtain- such, but members -hope that tho services they have given to the public will he appreciated in a practical manner by the public of Gisborne by assisting the Band in securing the necessary dress. The balance-sheet, which showed a credit balance of £2 19s 2d, must be .considered- very (satisfactory, and speaks well for the enthusiasm of the members. The receipts from all sources -amounted, to £l5O 9s 9d, whilst the expenditure totalled £147 10s 7d. Tho' report also expresses .appreciation of the valuable assistance that has.been given by the press, which the members recognise lias greatly helped to their success. Ow-iiig to tlie misconception held by a number of residents as to the name “Private,” which gave the impression that a donation sent in appreciation of tlieir efforts may. bo taken- as an insult, it was decided to change the namo of tho Band. The oniliion of the meeting was that it would be a wise move to alter tlio title, and it - was finally resolved that the Band ho named the Federal Brass Band.
