FIELDING, Sept. 25. Subscribers to the farmers’ fund for presentation to the Canterbury Farmers who defended the farm laborers’ case before the Arbitration Court now number 63, and large support is coming from the Hawke’s Bay and Wanganui districts.

The annual meeting of the New Zealand Hereford Cattle-breeders’ Association was held here to-day, Air. D. P. Buchanan presiding. The annual report stated that there was a credit balance of £471, and it was decided to offer for competition -at the Alanawatu and West Coast Association’s show in 1910 a handsome trophy for the best purebred Hereford bullock calved since June 30th, 190 S. It was further agreed that a similar trophy bo offered in 1911 for the best -purebred Hereford shop bullock, and another trophy in 1912 for the heaviest _ purebred' Hereford bullock, live weight. The following officers were elected : —President, Air. J. AlcGregor (Masterton) ;vice-president, Air. F. AI. Arbon (Pohangina); vacancies in council, Messrs D. P. Buchanan, G. C. AV-heeler, A. C. Alorton. AVELLINGjON, Sept. 25.

Tho Turnkina arrived to-night from London, bringing over 200 passengers, including 46 assisted immigrants. A number of domestics are among the list.

At an extraordinary general meeting of the Wellington Athletic Park Company to-day, it was resolved to wind up the company voluntarily. The Wellington Rugby Union is to take over the company’s lease and all its assets except books of accounts. The lease is for 63 years, in terms of 21 years each, the first of which has nearly expired. The paid-up capital of the company is stated in the last balance-sheet at £2337.

Already a number of applications have beon received for the position of matron at the McLean Institute Home for gentlewomen. The question of dealing with tho -applications as well as other business will come before the meeting of the Board of Governors of the McLean Institute to he held next Thursday.

Colonel Robin, C. 8., first officer of the Defence Council, was in Christchurch this morning. In company with Colonel Hawkins he witnessed <a parade of school cadets in Cranmer Square, which was held in preparation for to-morrow’s review. The condition of the young man Bryenton continues much the same. He is somewhat easier to-day, and Dr. Crooke thinks there is some chance of his recovery.

At a meeting of the Canterbury Industrial Association to-night strong exception was taken to the statement made by Mr. C. A. C. Hardy, M.P., ;n tho House that- local implement manufacturers were taking advantage of the Implement Importation Act to demand excessive prices from farmers, and to the allegation made by him recently in a speech at Brooksi.de that a case had come under his -notice where £3O had been charged for a £25 10s plough. It was decided to request Mr. ITardy to furnish tho Association with a copy of the invoice in question which he produced at the meeting. Interviewed to-day on the subject of tlio Government’s reformative legislation -proposals, Mr. H. W. Bishop. 8.M., said that he and Mr. D. G. Day, S.M., bad. for a long time past advocated the granting of power to release an habitual drunkard on probation provided lie showed signs of reforming. He had at- different times received a number of applications for the release of habitual drunkards, but could do nothing, in the matter. He also was greatly in favor of the proposal extending the definition of habitual drunkard to one who is twice convicted of a breach of a prohibition order.
