A notable addition t 0 the business portion of Gisborne has been made by the completion of the new premises erected on behalf of Messrs Hallenstein- Brothers, proprietors of the well-known clothing establishment, which has its branches in all the chief towns of the Dominion. Tiie building is of a particularly handsome design, as business premises go, and has an imposing aspect as seen from the main street. The various shops into which the building is divided are all designed on thoroughly up-to-date lines, and provide ample opportunity for the effective display of goodsMessrs Hallenstein, who will be open for business to-morrow, are located in one large shop which has two entrances and three large show windows, the shop being divided into various departments. On the one side is "the clothing department, which is already , stocked with new season’s goods, and on the other, the boot and shoe departments, which will be under the management of Mr. "IV. Johnson Brown, late of ICircaldie and Stains, Wellington. The shops have been fitted throughout in. stained kauri, and the counters are glass showcases fitted in walnut, with mirrors in convenient places. In the mercery department a large stock of tailored ready-to-wear clothing will be carried, and the firm will also specialise in hats, ties, underclothing, portmanteaux, travelling bags, rugs and other tourist equipment. The shop is well lighted from both front and rear. The ceilings are of Wunderlich metal and the decorative scheme is designed so as to give a maximum of light. At the rear a large raised office commands a view of all departments, and fitting and retiring rooms arc provided for the use of customers. The work of construction has been admirably carried out, and the entire fitting up and finishing has been done in a manlier reflecting the utmost credit upon the contractor, and liis workmen. The firm recognises the growing importance of the town of Gisborne, and as a good trade has always been done here, they show their confidence in being able to please their customers by entering into such commodious premises. Their stocks will therefore he thoroughly overhuiled, and the boot and shoo department will cater for the better class of trade that is to be done. Messrs Hallenstein Brothers have branches in every town of importance in the Dominion, as well as large warehouses in the four cities, and consequently they are able to buy lirgely and cheaply in the world's markets. ~ The branch will bo under the management of Mr. Gilmour, who has been in charge of the Gisborne shop for some time. Mr. .Towers, of the “Sweetcrics.” lias taken the other shop in the building and a large factory has been built at tlie rear, where lollies and candies of various kinds will be made. The largo warehouse at the rear has been leased by Messrs F. S. Malcolm and Co. for an auction room. The upstairs portion of the building is being fitted for offices and professional chambers.
