. At tlio no-lieenso meeting in St. Andrew’s Schoolroom last evening, the President announced that on Wednesday week Air. T. E. Taylor, of Christchurch, would pay a visit to Gisborno, and would givo three addresses in the Theatre, and would probably also speak iu tho open air.

There was only a moderate attendance in His Majesty’s Theatre last evening to witness tho final performance of the Salvation Army Biorama. Tho fieot pictures and a number of intensely humorous films were shown, and the audience laughed heartily atthe amusement provided. Tho biorama will be shown at To Arai this evening.

The Gisborne Orchestral Society has arranged a most attractive programme of music for the complimentary concert to bo given to thoir professional members, Alessrs Vita Brothers and R. N. McKay, in His Majesty’s Theatre on Alonday evening. Tickets cau be obtained from any member of the society or Mr. Jas. Chriep, secretary, at- popular prices.

A meeting of the Gisborno Freezers’ Union was held in Townley’s Hall last evening to arrange tho details for making the display in the Labor Day procession. All the members present expressed tlieir intention to take part, and Air. Old was appointed marshal. The members of the Union are requested to meet at the Drill Shed, Lowe Street, at 10 o’clock to-morrow morning to tako part. “I would'like to raise the question what constitutes residence on a section?” said Air. Lane, at tho Land Board’s meeting, yesterday. “That question has puzzled-a good many,” answered the Commissioner. “It is a question very' hard to decide,” replied Air. Lane, “especially when tlio applicant, is not married, and the Board cannot draw hard and fast lines.”

A correspondent, writing to the “Times,” mentions that the dairying industry in tho AVaikato district, is at present in a. flourishing state. Last year one farmer’s milk output for 60 cows was 000 gallons; this year, with 40 cows, lie is sending to the dairy factory nearly 1200 gallons of milk. The beautiful sjwing weather which has prevailed in tho district lias resulted in a most luxurious growth of grass. Tho asphalting of the surroundings of the bath at tho Gisborne School was completed at the end of last week. The school authorities, however, complain of the action of a . number of persons who, without permission, trespassed on the bath premises on Sunday and disturbed the newly-laid asphalt. Such trespassers will in future bo prosecuted, and an annoucement to that effect appears in another column.

js,t the fortnightly meeting of the Fire Brigade, held last evening, it was decided that members of the brigade take part in the Labor Day procession to-morrow in full dress uniform, with helmets and axes. They will take with them the hose reel and manual engine, which will be suitably decorated for tho occasion. The Gisborno Painters’ Union held ■a meeting in Air. G. E. Darton’s office last evening to malco arrangements to participate in the Labor Day procession. Air T. Williams presided, and thero was a largo attendance of members. It was reported the firms that would make displays wore Messrs Aston Brothers, F. Hall and Sons, AV. Howard, J. Alorrison, and J. D. Tustin, It was decided to enter a union team in the tug-of-war 'competition. There was a good attendance of children and their parents and friends at the Baptist Tabernacle last night, when Air. AV. H. Stanes, from India, conducted the first of a series of mootings in connection wit’s the United Children’s Alission. The lecture was closely followed by the children, and a number of interesting lantern slides were shown descriptive of tlio difference in tlio lives of children under Paganism and Christianity. A special meeting of tho Utility Poultry Club was held at All'. O. J. Morell’s store, AVhataupoko, last evening, to discuss tho advisability of exhibiting at tho coming spring show of tho Poverty Bay A. and P. Association. The sub-committee appointed to interview Air. H. M. Porter reported that a large number of classes for utility poultry would be placed in the prize schedule provided the club would comply with certain conditions, one of which was that the judges should be appointed by the club. It was reported that a fair number of entries were being received, and the club decided to exhibit' and to ask three local gentlemen to judge the exhibits. It is expected that the letters referred to by Air. Somo excitement was caused in Gladstone Road yesterday afternoon by a horse attached to Alessrs Taylor and Co.’s furniture cart taking fright near the Post Office and bolting. The vehicle was brought to a standstill at Miller’s corner by tho horse swerving and getting caught by a verandah post. A small boy was in the cart, and lie received a great fright. The vehicle was not damaged.

The success of tlio concerts given by tlio Gisborno Orchestral Society lias been so encouraging to the members that Alessrs E. Chrisp. and Sons yesterday landed a set of tympani from tho manufacturers, Messrs AVcav.cr and Dickson, of London, executed to the special order of the Society. Tho tynipani arc similar to tlio sot in use by tlio Dunedin Philharmonic Society. Tlio instruments, which can bo toned to cover a full octave, will bo played by Air. R. R. Baldrey, who recently camo to Gisborno in tlio service of the Union. Bank. The set, which cost 30 guineas, hag shells of beaten copper finished in nickel. One is 25 inches in diameter and the other 28 inches. They will probably bo used at- the" concert to be given by the society in the theatre next Alonday evening.

Somo mild excitement was caused in town last evening, about 5 p.m© by a rather sensational runaway. A horso and covered van belonging to Air. AV. J. Scholium was standing in the vice inity of the Masonic Hotel, and for some unexplained cause tho animal took fright and made off down Lowe Street, quickly gathering speed as ho went. On coming to. Kahutia Street tlio horso took the corner at full gallop, and lor a time a catastrophe appeared imminent. Ho kept on his course, however, without accident until reaching Grey Street, and here the vehicle again had a narrow escape, running for a few cards on two wheels only. Continuing his mad career, the horse turned into Childers Road, with tlio vehicle swaying wildly behind him, and it was not until he reached tlio upper end of the road that the runaway’s voluntary gallop was terminated by the vehicle coming into contact with a tree. Tho pace by this time had considerably slackened, and consequently little damage was done to the van, and the liorgo escaped entirely unhurt.
