RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION.

TEACHING THE YOUNG. AN AUCKLAND DISCUSSION [Press Association.]

AUCKLAND, Oct. .13. An animated discussion took place at the Anglican Synod this afternoon on the question of religious instruction for the young. The matter was introduced by tlie Rev. AA r . G. Monckton, who moved that the time has come when all Christians should unite in establishing and sunnorting Christian schools and repudiating a system of education that is avowedly wholly secular. He had put his resolution in that form instead of urging the teaching of the Bible in schools, because he believed that the only thing to do was for Christians to establish and support their own schools. The aim and object of tlie State in giving education was not the aim and object of the Christian. He did not appeal to the State to save but to Christianity to save the State. He urged them to follow the example set by Roman Catholics in the education of their young people. Tlie Rev. Canon Gould seconded the motion.

The Rev. H. Reeves moved as an amendment that a committee be set lip to report on the matter to next Synod, and this proposal was carried.
