AUCKLAND, Oct. 18. The cricket season opened here yesterday in beautiful weather. ... _ Ihe various district competitions under the auspices of the Auckland Cricket Association were commenced: . Tn the first-grade matches, playing against Eden colts, City made 86 m the first innings. The Eden colts had five wicket© down for 89 runs when time was called. . Parnell’s first innings -against ’Varsity realised 86, ’Varsity having three wickets down for 130 (Wallace 37, Jacobsen not out 61). " Ponsonby v. Eden A—Ponsenby first innings, 3.00 (Gavin 49) ; Eden A two widkets for 137 runs (BrookSmith 32, Cumming 57, Elliott not out 42).' Grafton v. North Shore — Grafton, first innings 160 (Mason 59, E Horspool 32); North Shore, six .wickets for 83 runs (Hollmgrako 42). There is greater interest being taken here in cricket this ee-ason than ever before in the History of the dame. : It is estimated that f ully .1000 cricketers took part in competition games under the control of the- various bodies yesterday. The Auckland Cricket Association has an increase of entries, in> all grades, the Auckland Associated League has 24 teams under its control, tho Sunday Schools Association lias 15, whilst the secondary arid public schools- competitions also show increased entries.
