Forest -fires destroyed a culvert, derailing a train-load of fugitives from Metz (Michigan).

The wreckage and piles of railway sleepers got on fire, and the men becoming panic-stricken fled, leaving the women and chldrcn on a steel car.

Fifteen charred skeletons were found.

The firemen took.,refuge in the en-gine-tank, and were boiled to. death.
