Cow, Opposition candidate for the (Bay of Plenty seat, had good meetings at Waimana and Taneatua, receiving encouraging receptions at both places.. His prospects, •from an Opposition standpoint, are exceedingly bright. MR. FOWLDS AT GREY LYNN STRONG STATEMENTS. '• [Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Oct, 17. At a welcome home tendered to the Hon. George Fowlds by his election committee at Grey Lynn last night, some pretty strong talk was indulged in about the coming contest in that-electorate. Mr Fow.lds, after deprecating the introduction of personalities into it lie contest, said that his presence in the Cabinet was likely to interfoTe'with the interests of ;i certain party, and it did not matter to them who it was stood for the seat so long as it was 'someone to defeat him. Air Sexton said the election was between bribery and corruption on the one bund and the people's interests on the other. Air C. *H. Poole, ALP., was responsible for the statement that in the electorate were to be found political assassins, hired and subsidised to kill the moral Info of the community. iAIT Poole further said: “When no-license comes this intriguing villainy that is honeycombing the politics of this country will be killed for ever.”

CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 17
Ex-Chief Detective W. L. Chrystal, who was u candidate for Christchurch East seat, has definitely decided to withdraw. The seat is held by T. H. Davcy, and there are still three opponents left.

Mr C. A] C. Hardy. ALP., Opposition ■candidate for Selwyn, addressed u large meeting at Rakaia Town Hall last evening. He expressed himself in -general agreement with the present educational system, declared himself a freeholder, and generally ridiculed the Government’s land Icgi'dalion, at 'the same time <repreeiting a land tax, and declaring for a more complete income tax. He strongly condemned the Government’s horrowing and 'building policy, and urged caution, though lie thought it would be wise policy on the part of the 'Government to lend more liberally to local bodies. He complained that settlers were unable to obtain even small loans from the Advances to Settlers’ Department. He believed in a modified form of protection, which lie considered had run wild in New Zealand, advocated a more adequate defence policy, and favored increasing the life of Parliament to five yeirs. He condemned the Second (Ballot Act. While not approving of compulsory arbitration he thought the Bill which the Minister foi Labor put through the House this yea/was a very useful and proper measure. A LABOR LEAGUE CANDIDATE. [Press Association.] DUNEDIN, Oct. 16.. Mr. J. AV. Muuro, Political Labor League candidate for Dunedin West, 'addressed a fairly well-attended meeting of electors last night. .In the course of his address he explained that the reason for the Labor party running a candidate against a member of the (Cabinet was that it had not confidence in the present Government. He severely criticised several .sections of the Arbitration Act Which lie regarded as being in particular an attempt t 0 stifle small unions. He opposed the 'Second Billot Act as undemocratic,,ami, concluding, lie received a unanimous vote of confidence. A GOVERNMENT SUPPORTER. [Press- Association.] INVE ft CAR GILL, Oct. 17. dVlr D. AlaclMierson, Liberal candidate for Wallace, addressed the electors at Nightcaps last night. He announced that lie would support the Government in their main policy measures. Mr Robert iScott, Opposition candidate for Tuapeka, addressed a large meeting of electors at Naseby last night, tHe criticised - the land legislation of the Government, declaring himself to he \x supporter of the freehold tenure, and said ho opposed the Government because ’of the methods it adopted to keep itself in power, because of its (leaping towards Seeiaiism, and because of its want of a clearly-expressed bud welldefined policy. He .would extend the Bmill and Swamp Crown Lands Act a's an inducement to young men .with_ email capital to go on the land. He supported an elective Legislative Council and the appointment of a Civil Service Board t , and condemned the Minister of Alines for his.inactivity in not spending the votes o-f Parliament for mining purposes. ■Air. C. A. C. Hardy, ALP., the Opposition candidate for Selwyn, addressed a large meeting at 'Rakaia last evening, and was accorded a vote of thanks. He. advocated land settlement wif till small holdings and the option, of the freehold, more cautious finance, a better defence system, ■moderate protection to ’local industries, and liberal provision for education.
