BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING.
The ordinry fortnightly meeting oI the. Gisborne Borough Council was held last evening. Present: ine Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lysnar), Crs. l,©hUe, Somervell, Mann, Bngh , AYhinrav, and Sawyer. COBRESROEDENCE. N - The. City Band submitted a list of dates for open-air concerts for the approval of the Council, and asked that' a platform bo erected on the AYaikanae Esplanade for band purposes, so that the beach could be made as popular as possible by the band giving open-air concerts there. 0 The Mayor said lie would like to see a-platform erected as early as possible and an amount for a rotunda could be placed in the loan proposals. It was decided to call tenders'lor ' the platform. ' v The District Health Officer (Dr. DeLisle) forwarded the conditions to be observed for .the exhumation of a body from the AATiataupoko cemetery, permission to disinter the body having been granted. The Inspector was instructed to see that the conditions were observed.
Mr Armstrong, Government Inspector of Works, applied for permission to lay a drain from the police station to the AYaikanae creek.
The request was, acceded to. Messrs W. L.. Rees and fifteen other ratepayers asked the Council to place a water trough between Taylor's store and the Mangapapa bridge on Ormond Hoad. Messrs Robb Brothers offered to erect the trough free of charge. It was decided to accept Messrs Robb Brothers’ offer with thanks.
All*. H. J. Brownlee wrote in reference to an alleged breach of the by-laws in Air. Erskine’s building in Reel Street. All*. Brownlee stated that he was prepared to do whatever the Council thought proper to rectify the breach, but to pull down the wooden building would mean a lost of £325. He thought all risk of fire could be obviated by covering the building with asbestos isheeting or concrete. : Air. Brownlee was also in attendance. Cr. Whinray said there was no excuse for a breach of the building bylaws. Cr. Somervell said a one-storey wooden building had merely been converted into a two-storey building. Cr. Bright said there were exceptional circumstances in the case, and suggested that Air. Brownlee should receive some consideraion for a breach for which 110 was not altogether liable. Cr. Whinray and the Mayor expressed similar views. " Ci*. Mann said it was the duty of the Council to support the action of the Inspector. Whatever concession was made would be an act of grace, but he did not wish to- see any hardship imposed 011 Air. Brownlee. The Works Committee was appointed to confer with Mr. Brownlee as to the best means of making the building safe from fire. Messrs J Chambers and Son forwarded the plans for a steam locomotive crane for use at the Kaitaratahi gravel pits. The plans were referred to the overseer.
The Night-watchman-reported a fire at Airs. W. D. Lysnar’.s property, Reel Street, on Sunday morning last. Crs. Somervell, Mann, -and the Alayor were appointed to confer with the Fire Board as to acquiring a site for a. fire station.
The Overseer reported that the work done during the fortnight was.of a general character. The Straker waggon had been in use and had done two trips a day to the quarry on two occasions. The swings donated by AL*s. AV. I). fysnar had been- erected on the AYaikanae beach.
The report- was adopted. The Council adopted .a scale of fees regulating tho dog pound, and then proceeded to discuss other questions reported elsewhere.
