COMMONWEALTH POLITICS

VOTE OF CENSURE.

LABOR PARTY SUPPORTS FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

United Press Association. Copyright

MELBOURNE, Oct, 20

In a full .House, Mr. Reid moved his motion of censure on the Budgetproposals. In a slashing speech, lie charged the. Government /with reckless finance, which had enormously increased the revenue. They proposed to absorb the whole remaining aftei* paying back thi’eer'fourths to tho States. This would leave nothing to meet the vicissitudes of Federal finance, and no margin of safety in the desperate system of finance. The Federal services, especially the Post Office and the Defence Department, were being starved, while the Government proposed to largely increase the outlay in connection with old age pensions, tho defence scheme, immigration, and in other directions. MELBOURNE, Oct. 21.

Mr. Deakin, replying to Mr. Reid’s attack, said that so far from being extravagant the Government had been rigorously economical. The sums returned to the States had gone up in a. gratifying fashion, but the ' States were far. from satisfied on the ques-, tion of Commonwealth borrowing. It was essential that some understanding should he arrived at between the* Commonwealth and the States. It would be with the utmost reluctance that he would see the Commonwealth: embark on a borrowing policy. The Government were carrying out a policy which the people of Australia weremore and more Coming to appreciate, and were carrying it out with the assistance of the Labor party, with, whom its relations were entirely in accord.'.

The Labor party held a caucus last evening, and decided to support tho Government.

About 200 unemployed invaded the vestibule, and attempted to enter the galleries of the House. Tho police wei-e reinforced, and ultimately ejected the men from the building.
