LONDON. Oct. 23

At the sheepskin sales 8000' bundles were offered, including 7000 Australian. There was a fair attendance. Competition was less animated than at the September sales. There was a fair number of withdrawals. Merinos and crossbreds sold at par to a farthing cheaper. Best combings were at the iSep tern tier level. The last sale of the series is fixed for December I.7th.

Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co. have received the following cablegram from London, dated 22nd inst: — “Sheepskins, merino, full-woolled, declined gd; half-woolled and shorter declined -gd to l,d; coarse crossbred, full-woolled, show no material change; fine crossbred, full-woolled, declined id; crossbred, half-woolled and shorter, declined gd to |d.”

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., report on stock sale at Matawhcro last Thursday:—The attendance was scarcely up to the average, whilst the yardings were very extensive in both departments for this season of the year. A general dullness characterised the sale, and bidding was slow and displayed want- of confidence on the part, of buyers generally. Nevertheless, considerable business was put through in both sheep and cattle at prices which showed a reduction on those obtaining at last sale by about Is a head on sheep, whilst serviceable lines of cattle about maintained their value.

Sheep : Our entry comprised 5649, the major portion of which were hoggets. Shorn .sheep made their appearance for their first sale this season. Our sales comprised —Fat ewes light weights 11s Gd to 12s 2d, well, finished sheep 13s to 14s, ewes and lambs in low condition 7s 6d to 11s 6d, better lines 15s Gd to IGs, cull hoggets made from 4s to 7s 3d, while good average lines of hoggets realised 9s to 10s Gd. All above quotations are in the wool. For shorn sheep we marketed 2-tooth wethers ISs Gd, 4-tootli, small, 9s 3d, average lines 10s Bd, 2-U 'b ewes 9s Id and these quotations may he regarded as current market value. Cattle: We had a very heavy entry.' 934 came forward and 417 were sold at fair times values. Steers were in demand, but female stock generally were neglected. It is fair to say th at the major portion of the passed lots comprised cattle whose owners had not apparently realised the drop in values and were not then prepared to face the market. M e sold —Beef cows light weights £3 15s to £4 ss, better finished cattle from £4 15s to £5 10s, dairy cows, for which there is no competition. £2 12s Gd to £3, calves 17s, 12-month heifers 30s, herd cows £2, yearling steers 325, 15 to 18 months £2 4s to £2 9s Gel.
