CRICKET.

UNITEID v. TE RAU

These teams met on Saturday at the Victoria Domain in the first round of the championship matches. Te Rau batted first and made an extremely bad- start against the bowling of Reynolds and Manning, five wickets being down for 10 runs. At this stage a -heavy sliower drove the players to the pavilion, and up recommencing the ball was very greasy and neither bowlers nor fieldsmen were able to hold. The remaining five batsmen added 57 runs, and the innings closed for 66. Upon United going in to bat another bad commencement resulted, and when play was finally stopped on account of rain they had lost four wickets for 21 runs. Reynolds played a nice innings for his contribution of 13 not out. The following are scores :

The home team won the toss and went to the wickets, but did not fare too well, and the last wicket fell when the score had reached 48. Davies 18 and Sharpies 10 were the chief contributors. Shortly after Wanderers went in to bat- rain fell, and stopped play, but when stumps were drawn they had lost 5 wickets for 35 runs. Babb (15 not out) was the only batsman to show any form. The first round of the Auckland Cricket Association’s district championship was concluded on Saturday in weather conditions the reverse ot pleasant, rain falling at intervals during the afternoon. The following are the results of the senior grade matches: Eden A v. Ponsonby : Eden 218 for 6 wickets (declared), Cummings 56, Elliott 62); Ponsonby 100 and 54. Eden won by .an- innings and 64 runs, thus securing a three point win- North Shore v : Grafton: •North (Shore 223 tor 8 wu£ets (declared), (Holingake 42 and Buskol), Grafton 160, -and 20 for no wickets. North 'Shore won by 63 runs on the innings. City v. -Eden colts: City 86 and. l 139 for 5 wickets (Rose 41) • Eden Colts 128. _ Eden Colts won by 42 on the first innings. Darnell v" University: Parnell 86 and 115 for four wickets (Hutchings 47 not out); University 186 (Jacobsen 68). ’ The University won by 100 runs on the first innings.
