POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB’S SPRING MEETING.
SECOND DAY
The spring meeting of the Poverty Bay Turf Club was concluded yesterday.' In the early part of the afternoon the weather conditions were all that could be desired, but. later pn, just as the principal event, the Makaraka Handicap, was about to bo run, a heavy squall passed over the course, accompanied by driving rain, making matters most unpleasant for a time. In tlio majority of the races the fields were very small, the scratching pen being freely used, and m the Waikanae Handicap only two horses lined up at the barrier. Tlie attendance was again large, but not quite so great as on the previous day, and once more a fair .number of ladies graced the lawn by their presence. Th racing was with one exception clean-, and some good finishes were seen. The stewards were called together to enquire into the suspicious running of Andrew Mack in the AVaikanae Handicap, and after a lengthy enquiry it was resolved" that 13. Deelev, who rode the horse, be suspended for six months, ancj a further enquiry regarding the owner and the horse will bo lield at 10 o’clock this morning. Twelve bookmakers were again on the course, _ and were doing a brisk business, having a better day, as the fancied horses in one or two instances did not justify the opinions of backers.
