BOWLING.
THE GISBORNE CLUB,
The members of the Gisborne Bowling Club mustered in strong force on their green yesterday, and, despite the rain which came on in the .afternoon, a very pleasant time was spent. Some of the club’s tournament matches were got off, and in .addition, a number of extemporised games were Among the piayers were some visiting bowlers, one of whom, Mr. AAV Mercer, of the Mount Eden Club, acted as skip to a couple of rinks during the day. At one he scored a win, and in tho other was beaten by a single point. The following are the results of the games played during the day:— HANDICAP PAlßS—(First Round.) R. C. Crawford and G. Miller (10), 28; beat O. Hausen and J. J. Martin (2), 14. HANDICAP FOURS—(First Round.) Brown, R. G. Crawford, W. Play was indulged in all day yesterday at the Turanganui Club s green, and enjoyable games resulted. In the morning nearly all tho rmks were occupied in friendly games, while in tho afternoon among the games played were a couple of the Handicap Four matches. There was a large* attendance of bowlers, and during the afternoon a njnnber of ladies were present. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. B. Hird, and was very acceptable. HANDICAP FOURS.
The following were the results of the games played in the Handicap Fours competition: Harries, R. Skeet, Bennett, J. J • Martin (skip), 36 ;beat Ley don, Bruce, McConnell, (Sawyer (skip), 12. In this game Sawyer’s team received 2 points, but the handicap did not avail against the combined pi-ay of Martin’s rink, who were 13 to 4 on the seventh herd, and whose lead was never troubled. TT Lapidge, H. Martin, Neill, Hall am (skip), 22 ;beat Nicholis, Farrell, Gussen, Nasmith, junr. (skip), 16. In this game Hay played as substitute for Martin, and. McSkimmmg tor Nicholis. The match was keenly contested throughout. On the sth head Nasmith’s rink fed by 7 to 4, and on the Bth head by 11 to 5. On the adjournment, Hallam had drawn up within one of the leadersr—ll—ld, and drew level on the 1/th head 16 all. Scoring a 1,3, 1 on Hie next three heads, Hallam led by o on the 20th head. Lapidge drew the shot on the last head, while his opponents got five round him. Requiring 5 to tie, Nasmith essayed two difficult shots at the scoring ball, and though removing the shot bowl a little 'd l *- tance out, he failed to put it outside ,his own five, thus sustaining defeat by 6 points.
