GRAND JURY PRESENTMENT.

ASSAULTS -UN CHILDREN.

[Press Association.]

AUCKLAND, Nov. 11. Prior to the discharge of the grand jury at the sessions oi t-lie Supreme Court, the foreman submitted to Mr. Justice Edwards the following unani-mously-passed resolution: “That the grand jury has the utmost horror and concern at the continued increase in crimes of indecent assault on young children, and respectfully urges that whenever a prisoner is found guilty of this offence the moat drastic form of minisliment should be meted out to him.”

His Honor said that he agreed with the jury, and deplored the terrible increase in such offences. He wished sometimes that the duty of dealing with these cases fell to someone else. There were some very difficult cases. He had nothing further to say under the circumstances except to make a recommendation, but lie could assure them that the facts caused him quite as mueb anxiety as they had given the jury.
