A FIRE INQUIRY.
NO EVIDENCE TO SHOW CAUSE

DUNEDIN, Nov. 12
An inquiry was held at Kaitangatu to-day concerning the fire which dcstroyed the Miners’ Union offices and other premises on October 7tli. The evidence showed that the secretary and others, including the auditors, were in the offices on the night of October 6th, leaving about S o’clock. The secretary admitted a deficiency of £44 in liis accounts for tho halfyear ended June 30tli, but believed a rumor of a large deficiency to be groundless. A witness named .Soulless, a chemist, said ho heard a tapping noise and sounds in tho union offices for an hour, from about 11 p.m., as if someone was 'tramping 1 ' about. The fire was discovered at 1.55 in the morning. Another witness, Weston, exj-president of flic union, said that there was a deficiency of over £2OO in the union funds. The jury found that the fire originated in tho union, offices, but that there was no evidence to show liow it started.
