WELLINGTON NOTES
[Special to “Times.”]
WELLINGTON, Nov. 12
Mr Byron Brown, who seems to be making considerable headway -against the GoA*ernment candidate for the Otaki seqt, says the time has como when- members should reduce their own salaries, not increase them. £4OO a year, he added, meant- the inundation of the House with professional politicians and there Avere plenty of this- class there already. Men 'would- do more for hon'or than they Avould. for gold, and the real patriot would covet a place in the House even if he were paid nothing. The Hon. T. W. Hislop says Sir Harry Atkinson was the greatest Liberal' that ever lived in New Zealand, and Mr Hislop, it may be remarked, is not an Opposition candidate.
Mr J. W. Murrell, the new candidate for Wellington S-outh, Avas (says the “Post”) lauding and applauding Sir Joseph Ward -last night at the Alexandra Hall. “AX hat did lie tike a title for?” came a voice from his audience. “Would you take one?' “Certainly I Avoukl,” replied the candidate. “The chief reason I say so is that I am never likely to be offered a title.” “A title is only a handle,” declared the interjector finally. “It is,” added Mr. Murrell.
An elector asked Mr Atkinson, at an open-air meeting, if lie approved of Maori women wearing red stockings and also whether he thought, that Chinamen should he made to rvear kilts. To the first of these questions Mr Atkinson replied that he saiv .no objection to the practice, and to the second 'he “would like to see the Chinese immigration kilt entirely.” The retort seemed to please the croAvd and .satisfy the questioner..
