PROHIBITION IN MAINE.
ASSERTION OF FAILURE DENIED PEOPLE WILL CO-.MNUE PROHIBITORY LAW. The Christchurch Prohibition League telegraphed ou November 9th to the Governor of the State of Maine. United States, stating that the liquor party alleged that there is niore drunkenness and crime in Maine than ill license States in proportion to population, asking if this was true, and requesting an immediate reply. An answer was received- yesterdav from the Governor of Maine, Mr. William T. Cobb, to the effect, that the allegations of the liquor party were, in his judgment, absolutely false.

AUCKLAND, Nov. 13. Mr. J. Guiiaon, of Auckland, to-dav received the following cable from the Governor of Maine, U.S.A., in answer to one sent yesterday as to the effect of no-license there:—“ln my judgment the people of Main© will continue the prohibitory law, they believing it to be the best method commercially and morally of controlling the liquor traffic.—(Signed) Win, IVCobb, Governor State of Maine.”
