The “Standard” supports greatly reduced Empire cable rates, and supports Mr. Lemieux’s suggestion that the Imperial oversea Governments take the whole problem into practical consideration.
MELBOURNE, Nov. 13
Mr. Scott, secretary of the central postal administration, declared that the • sentiment in favor of cheaper cables required to ho supported by figures! before a big reduction-in rates was made. A calculation had been made that if the Pacific cable were occupied continuously day and night all the year at a penny a word messages the returns would not more than pay the £77,500 required for the interest -and instalment towards the requirement of capital. The working expenses and upkeep would be a dead loss. If the rates were made cheaper, code words would have to be prohibited. r- . Mr. Deakin stated that tlie Atlantic cable companies stood against re duction. If these had reduced thenrates, the Pacific rates would have been reduced long ago. Any arrangement for cheaper rates would be greatly welcomed in Australia .
