SMALL GRAZING RUNS.

THE COMMISSIONER’S EXPLANATION.

[Press Association.]

NAPIER, Nov. 13. At the Hawke’s Bay Land Board •meeting to-day, the Commissioner (Mr. H. Trent) said he had an explanation to make in regard to the matter of F. Halil’s small grazing run at Gisborne. In the recommendation of the Board to the Department it was stated by an office error that the run was not suitable for subdivision, whereas it should have been (stated that the land was suitable. The Minister was therefore not to blame, the mistake being a departmental one for which he (the Commissioner) was responsible, and he was very sorry it had occurred. Mr. Eustace Lane, a member of the Board, said that tlie papers containing tlie clerical error mentioned by tlie l Cbmmisioner were sent to •ilington, and another letter accurately stating the Board’s recommendation was sent to Mr. Hall. The Hon. Jas. Carroll had forwarded this Setter to Wellington, and the Department, therefore, bid two letters containing contradictory statements. Mr. Lane proceeded to criticise the action, of the .Government, whereupon tlie Commissioner said he could not 'allow discussion on the administration of the Government at meetings of this description, land he would stand by that ruiling. If Mr. Lane ■ found fault with the administration lie must draw attention to it by other olio mi els. After a little further discussion, the meeting abruptly ended.
