MR. DARTON’S VIEWS.
( [To the Editor.] Sir, —Judging from tlio questions pfit by Mr. Ear ton’s supporters at the Theatre last night at would appear that Mr. Darton is not a single taxer, lint in his last speech, when referring to the cost of living, Mr. .Darton said, "The remedy was to make the cost of living cheaper and the way to do this was to reduce their taxation. The graduated land tax would, os well as benefiting the land, help in this manner. At present the taxes were oeing put. on to the men who were least able to bear - them, and they would be better off muier the graduated land tax. The Socialist organ “The Appeal to lleason’’ is an attempt to define Mr. Darton says on this point, “Mr. Darton js a single taxer.” Mr. Clayton’s remark to the same clfeet only shows that he had arrived at- the same conclusion. It may be that- as the- Socialists were quite wrong in claiming Mr. Darton as a supporter and champion of Socialism, .so they arc wrong in their stating that ho is a single taxer. Unfortunately this vagueness, which’s characteristic of most of Mr. Darton’s political views is not likely to be dispelled by the candidate himself. Like ciie “Scarlet Pimpernell”—“Wc seek him here, we seek him there. The curious seek him everywhere. Is he a straight un? Is he a smart un? This demn'd elusivci Mr. Darton. — 1 am etc.
“A STRAIGHT UN.”
