SCULLING.
THE WHELCH-THOROUGHGOOD RACE. LETTER FROM WHELCH. [Press Association.] CHRIST CH URCH, Nov. 16. In a letter received on Saturday by Mr'M. G. Daly, Whelch states that he feels fairly well now, and is train-* ing hard. He has secured a pacer named Hancock, who is a very fair man. Thev do the course twice daily, doing 12 miles well. They keep this up till the last week, and thence once daily over the course. The tide iat the time of the race will he nearly low, and l the two contestants will have to scull'against it. Whelch is still going down in weight.,, . He now scales 9st 111 b stripped, and will row at 9st 101 b. He states that Thoroughgood is having a hard job to get his stake money. The- papers comment on the way he is being treated, compared ■with the Altaroa liberality - to'Whelch. Two steamers will follow tlie race, and two Tie oil the course. At a regatta, to be held to-day, Whelch and Thorough good (scr.), and Hancock (28sec), have been entered in a handicap race of two Opinions are very varied as to the big race, many thinking Whelch is tom small to heat a big man,
